SUMMARY OF THE THEORY

Parse's model of human becoming emphasizes how individuals choose and bear responsibility for patterns of personal health.

Parse contends that the client, not the nurse, is the authority figure and decision maker. The nurse's role involves helping individuals and families in choosing the possibilities for changing the health process. Specifically. the nurse's role consists of illuminating meaning (uncovering what was and what will be), synchronizing rhythms (leading through discussion to recognize harmony), and mobilizing transcendence (dreaming of possibilities and planning to reach them).

Parse states that " In true presence the nurse's whole being is immersed with the client as the other illuminates the meanings of his or her situation and moves beyond the moment"

KEY CONCEPT

Concept 1: The nurse is guided by the Human Becoming Theory experiences true presence and involves the person participation as he/she co-authors his/her health and quality life.

Concept 2: The use of Human Becoming Theory looks and sounds like common sense commitment to promote human dignity. (Parse, 1990a).

  1. Universal truths intertwine with The Art of Human Becoming. The ideas and principles of illimitability, paradox, freedom and mystery invoke philosophical thoughts that are echoed in literary art. Here we share some quotes from famous people that resonate the themes of illuminating meaning, shifting rhythms and inspiring transcendence.

    On MEANING

“Everything you can imagine is real.” ― Pablo Picasso

“A wonderful fact to reflect upon, that every human creature is constituted to be that profound secret and mystery to every other.” ― Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities

“We can never judge the lives of others, because each person knows only their own pain and renunciation. It's one thing to feel that you are on the right path, but it's another to think that yours is the only path.” ― Paulo Coelho

”A human being - what is a human being? Everything and nothing. Through the power of thought it can mirror everything it experiences. Through memory and knowledge it becomes a microcosm, carrying the world within itself. A mirror of things, a mirror of facts. Each human being becomes a little universe within the universe!” ― Guy de Maupassant

“The great gift of human beings is that we have the power of empathy, we can all sense a mysterious connection to each other.” ― Meryl Streep

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go.” ― Dr. Seuss, Oh, The Places You’ll Go!

    On RHYTHMICITY

“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don't resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.” ― Lao Tzu
“Chaos was the law of nature; Order was the dream of man.” ― Henry Adams, The Education of Henry Adams

“Man lives consciously for himself, but serves as an unconscious instrument for the achievement of historical, universally human goals.” ― Leo Tolstoy, War and Peace

“Life is a series of pulls back and forth... A tension of opposites, like a pull on a rubber band. Most of us live somewhere in the middle. A wrestling match...” ― Mitch Albom, Tuesdays with Morrie

“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” ― Albert Einstein

“Keep your language. Love its sounds, its modulation, its rhythm. But try to march together with men of different languages, remote from your own, who wish like you for a more just and human world.” ― Hélder Câmara, Spiral Of Violence

“To live is to be musical, starting with the blood dancing in your veins. Everything living has a rhythm. Do you feel your music?” ― Michael Jackson

    On TRANSCENDENCE

“Human beings are not born once and for all on the day their mothers give birth to them, but ... life obliges them over and over again to give birth to themselves.” ― Gabriel García Márquez

“The individual appears for an instant, joins the community of thought, modifies it and dies; but the species, that dies not, reaps the fruit of his ephemeral existence.” ― A.S. Byatt, Possession

“One day, in retrospect, the years of struggle will strike you as the most beautiful.” ―Sigmund Freud

“I think that we are like stars. Something happens to burst us open; but when we burst open and think we are dying; we’re actually turning into a supernova. And then when we look at ourselves again, we see that we’re suddenly more beautiful than we ever were before!” ― C. JoyBell C.
